The Art of Making Sini Calligraphy

Types of Brushes in Sini Calligraphy

  1. Board brush: made of wood or bamboo.

  2. Flax brush: made of the fibre of flax, with a shape of a broom.

  3. Straw brush: Straw has joints. Tie the thin straw without joints together to make a brush. The stem of the straw is hollow, and there's a space between each piece of straw. So it can hold enough ink when you write.

Board brush and flax brush can be used to write directly on the Xuan Paper. Yet straw brush can only be used on thick Xuan Paper.

Some calligraphers do not wrap their bamboo brush with cloth. They knock the top of their brush flat with a hammer, and then dip it in water to make it soft. Then write directly with it.
